How To Prevent Neck Pain While Sitting at Your Computer Desk

Written By All Seasons Integrative Health on March 23, 2023

Workstation Ergonomics

One of the most common causes of neck pain and strain is poor posture while sitting at a desk or in front of a computer all day. Improving your posture, using an adjustable chair, and making your workstation more ergonomic overall can prevent chronic neck pain. If your neck pain is interfering with your ability to work, visit our chiropractor for neck pain treatment in Fargo.

Use a Fully Adjustable Chair

An adjustable chair will improve your posture and reduce the pressure put on your lower back, shoulders, and neck. Adjust the chair so that your back is firmly against the back of the chair, your feet are flat on the floor, your thighs are tilted slightly downwards, and the chair is about three inches from your desk, directly in front of your computer.

Improve Your Workstation Ergonomics

Your workstation ergonomics refers to improving the layout of your workstation and the equipment you’re using so that it’s easier to work and you’re less likely to experience aches, pains, and strains. Make sure your computer monitor is at eye level, your keyboard is placed at mid-chest height, and you’re using a wrist pad to support your wrists while you type. Objects you use frequently should be at easy reach, so you don’t have to bend or stretch to reach them.

Maintain Proper Posture

Maintaining proper posture while you work can significantly reduce the pressure and strain on your neck. Once your chair is adjusted, be sure that your head remains level and straight, and your shoulders are back and level with your hips. Get up and walk around or stretch every hour or so and use a sit/stand desk if possible.
